TPP bad. Trump pulls the US out of the TPP. Trade war bad. Trump considers rejoining the TPP.
This entire period in our country's timeline would be quite comical if it was, say and HBO sitcom or even a parody on Saturday Night Live.
But, this is our reality.
The "Mango Mussolini," (I borrowed that term from a random Tweeter, ran on pulling the US out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, among other dumb and idiotic ideas.
Now, with a trade war with China looming and the farmers who helped elect Trump reeling from the effects of China's tariffs on pork and soybeans, among other US exports, it appears Trump is considering rejoining the TPP.
The Washington Post reports:
Senator John Thune (R-South Dakota) declared during a meeting with Trump and other lawmakers and governors regarding trade issues, "if you really want to get China’s attention, one way to do it is start doing business with all the people they’re doing business within the region: their competitors."President Trump told top administration officials Thursday to look at rejoining the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the multination trade agreement he pulled the United States out of shortly after taking office.Rejoining the pact would be a major reversal as Trump escalates a trade conflict with China. The 11-nation Pacific rim trade deal was intended by the Obama administration as a way to counter China’s influence, but Trump criticized the pact as a candidate and pulled the United States out of the pact in early 2017.
Trump then told Lighthizer and Kudlow to “take a look at getting us back into that agreement, on our terms of course,” Thune said. “He was very I would say bullish about that.”Another Republican agreed:
Now, whose stupid idea was it to pull out of TPP and why did Obama take so much criticism for being a part of it?“We should be leading TPP,” said Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska). “China is a bunch of cheaters and the best way to push back on their cheating would be to be leading all these other rule of law nations in the Pacific that would rather be aligned with the U.S. than with China.”
