It's hard to believe, but there is another liar in the Trump White House.
CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who will face a Senate confirmation hearing to fill the vacant Secretary of State position, apparently isn't good at memory.
In the confirmation hearing for his current position, Pompeo was asked if he, in the last decade, had been involved in any financial or business transactions with a foreign government or any entity controlled by a foreign government.
Pompeo confidently answered, "No."
Yet, quite expectedly in today's White House, the truth was a little bit different.
According to documents received by McClatchy, Pompeo's company did, in fact, work with the Chinese government.
Pompeo's Kansas company, SJ Petro Pump Investment, imported oilfield equipment from a company owned by the Chinese government.
Asked why Pompeo failed to disclose that arrangement, a CIA spokesman said:
“Mr. Pompeo was president of an American company in Kansas that sold products made in many different countries, Canada and China to name just two. In fact, the paper clips the company used were from Taiwan. He would have no reason to know details on the layers of companies that may or may not have had ownership interests in each overseas company that supplied products to his Kansas company.”That seems to be a plausible explanation.
After all, many large corporations have layers upon layers and not all business execs are tied into every dealing.
But, that's not the case here, according to Pompeo himself.
In a 2010 Wichita Eagle story, Pompeo defended himself against claims made by the Democratic challenger in the 4th District Congressional race that Pompeo was supporting manufacturing jobs in China by dealing with a Chinese supplier.
"SJ Petro or SJ Petroleum Machinery Co., is a subsidiary of Sinopec, one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies. It was majority owned by China Petrochemical Corporation, a state-owned enterprise, according to its 2008 annual report."Pompeo has vehemently denied that, saying he has created American jobs by importing oilfield equipment from China and installing and servicing it in the U.S.Secretary of State records show that Pompeo is the registered agent for a Kansas company called SJ Petro Pump Investment. He said the company acts as an agent that sells and distributes high-pressure pumps made by the Chinese firm SJ Petro. He said the local firm does no direct manufacturing and shares employees, primarily sales force, with Sentry International.
To sum this up, in 2010, Pompeo admitted to dealing with a Chinese company, affiliated with the Chinese government, to defend himself against claims that he was hurting American manufacturing companies, yet seven years later he had forgotten about those dealings.
Either he has short-term memory loss, which should result in his immediate replacement in the CIA and exclude him from consideration for the Secretary of State position or he lied, which should result in his immediate replacement in the CIA and exclude him from consideration for the Secretary of State position.
But, this is Donald Trump's America now.
Loyalty is rewarded while lies are ignored.
At least we don't have to worry about her emails.
